About Christopher Thomas, Sr.

Christopher Thomas was born on 1604 in England to Tristram Thomas and Elizabeth Marsh Thomas. Christopher married (1.) Anne Coursey. Christopher married (2.) Juliana Stacy and had a child: Tristram Thomas. He passed away on 1660 in Sundridge, Kent, England.

Christopher Thomas is my 9th great grandfather.

Came to America in 1635. Member of the General Assembly of Freeman, elected to House of Burgesses in 1637 or 1638 for Kent County, which at the time encompassed much of present-day Eastern Shore Maryland. Later disappeared from records/history, then reappeared in 1664 and built an estate known as Barbados Hall. It is thought that he was in the Caribbean for a time, where he remarried.

Barbados Hall: Christopher returned to Wales in 1663 perhaps to ask his family's blessings on his upcoming marriage. Chris returned to America in 1664 . He applied for a land grant of 350 acres near the Higgins Plantation at St. Peter's Parish; and married Elizabeth Higgins in 1664. There Chris built "Barbados Hall" on the south side of Chester River, and Corsica creek, Talbot Co. Maryland; which his son Tristram III inherits in 1679. The house still stands today.

For 24 years nothing more is known of Christopher Thomas until he appears in 1664 in Maryland with his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Higgins, and demands land. He received a warrant for 350 acres, called Barbados Hall. This famous estate owned by Tristram Thomas III and by Edmond Thomas in 1723 still stands.

In 1679 Mrs Elizabeth Higgins Thomas, widow of Christopher Thomas, who had died 25 March 1670, then the wife of Matthew Smith, conveyed to Tristram Thomas III, her step-son, all her interest in the landed estate left by his father, Christopher Thomas.
