When Clarenda Selvey was born on October 12, 1856, in West Virginia, her father, Thomas, was 20 and her mother, Frances, was 20.

She married Adolphus Theodore Yates on Nov. 3, 1870 and they had six children together between 1872 and 1895.

Note: Her name is inscribed CLARRENDA, but it is spelled Clarenda on most of her records and Clarinda in a newspaper clipping:

"Clarinda Selvey, a daughter, now residing on the old Selvey homestead near Simpson, where her father died."
