NORTH LISMORE IMPROVEMENTS,
AN ASSOCIATION FORMED.
: As briefly . stated in Saturday 's issus, the proposed Ratepayers and Citizens' Assoeia-tion at North Lismore . was formed on Friday un&lter most fa\'orable auspices. Some 'thirty property owners and residents attended, rep-
resentative of- the principal interests. Mr. ex- Alderman B. Jackson presided, and Mr. N. C. Hewitt was elected hon. secretary pro tern. Apologies regretting inability to be present were received from Messrs. F. A. Lc.Poer Trench, M. O'Neill, J. y Nunan, G. L. Bond-field, and H. Pritchard, promising to join the Association and to do their utmost to further its 'interests. , , ' The chairman explained the objects of the me'etiiig, pointed out the negleet of the interests of North Lismore by successive Councils and emphasising the need for an Association of some kind. 7 . , Mr. . A. Shaw-Thompson, in dilatipg : upon the small amount -of ratepayers' money' that was spent in North Lismoye- rqut of all proportion, to the -revenue- recci\?e'd' from it-said tliq wires were pulled to get the money spent about Girard's Hill, out; the Hospital Hill Way, and over in South Lismore ; then Avhy riot haA'e a wire pulled for North Lismore ? If :they joined together into one strong Association they Avould be the means of: advahc-irig North Lismore, VAvhich had been sadly neg lected. The" last Association liad been the means:of electing Mr, Hewitson to the Couli-cil;' and he ' had been instrumental 7 in getting fdr theni one or two works carried out. Mitchell proposed that it be called the North Lismore Ratepayers and Citizens' Association. He said it was simply disgraceful, .the way North Lismore had been treated. Thousands of pqunds had been received from there in rates in- recent years and only a few hundreds spent. They must pull the Avire arid pull it strong. Seconded by Mr. W. Riley and carried. Mr. John Carr supported the 'motion. Mr. Jackson moved that the officers consist of a president, two vice-presidents; a trcasu:er and secretary. Seconded by Mr. K. Sutherland and carried. . | Mr. 'Carr proposed that Mr. William Riley be ..appointed President. , . .. Seconded by Mr. J. McCosli Hewitson and carried .7 . For the positions of vice-pfesideiits Mr.; T, Bolan nominated Mr, William Rayner. and Mr. Thompson .nominated Mr, HeAvitsbn, who, hoAA'evcr, declined qlection, and nominated Mr. Thompson, ; Thofq being 110 other candidates Messrs. IV. Rayiier and A. Shaw-. Thompson Averc declared elected. , : . 'Messrs. -N. C. Hciritt and G. L.'BoHdticld were elected hon. secretary and hon. treasurer respectively . ; Mr. W. 'Riley, on taking the chair, was.ac-coided ari orvtion. He said lie . hoped tliey all intended to make their Association a live body. ' If they could get good representatives in the Council they had a prospect of a fair expenditure of the rates, but not unless. As the artiele in the "Star" said, North Lismore has inany natural advantages and is the best situated part of the city. 1'hey had been hampered in one Avay and, another, but the fqture of tho suburb never looked brighter than it did to-day. The subscription Avas fixed at four shillings per annum, payable at the rate of. one shilling quarterly." It was decided that the ordinary rules of debate should srovern the proceedings preced-
ing the drawing up of a code of rules by the executive officers ; that this committee should meet on Wednesday evening for this purpose. The meeting adjourned until Friday riiglit next at the same hour and place, when the rules will be submitted by . the executive officers for approval or othei'Avise. Some thirty-fiA'e names were handed in as members. A diseussion ensued on matters AvhieU the Association intends to agitate for, and among the subjects which were dealt Avith Avere the following : - The necessity, of expediting the building of the District High School ; better poliee protection for North Lismore ; necessity for a primary school as at South Lisinore improvement and repairs to Faweett bridge ; enforcement of the Building Act at North Lismore the congregating of the aborigines in North Lismore : the , setting apart of a railway carriage or two for -the use of outgoing passengers from North Lismore station; and alternate Avater main across the river from the Avater Avorks ; reclamation of swamp in Lake-street by garbage deosits, and a number of other minor works.
