About Clement Bate of Hingham

Clement and Ann had only 8 children. John and an unnamed infant died in England. Clement Jr died at 12 in Hingham, MA. Rachell died unmarried at 21 in Hingham. James, Joseph, Benjamin, and Samuel married and settled in MA. Note that it was the 2nd and 3rd generation who started adding an S to Bate. It seems many transcribed sources retroactively add the S to make it consistent with later generations. See the profile for Clement Bate at Great Migration 1634-1635, A-B. {Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2008.) Geographical Note: Hingham was founded in 1635 as the 12th town of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was included within Suffolk County when the county was created May 10, 1643. Cohasset was originally the 2nd Parish of Hingham, and it became a separate town in 1770. The southern section of Suffolk (including Cohasset, Hingham, and Hull) was split off to Norfolk County in 1793. and then Hingham and Hull joined Plymouth County in 1803 - leaving Cohasset as an exclave of Norfolk County. The location of the cemetery is listed with current geographical place names to facilitate identification.
