Coen van der Walt (1956 – 2023)
Brief overview:
Coen (67), a farm foreman, was shot dead during a farm attack at his farmhouse outside Amalia, Schweizer-Reneke on the 25th December 2023.
Coen and his girlfriend Linda Thomas were in town, and after arriving home, the attacker was waiting for them. He had gained entry to the house through the roof. It appears that he had found Coen's pistol which was in the house.
According to Sarel Pretorius, security chairman of Agri North West, the attacker demanded bank cards, cash and jewellery, all of which Linda handed over. A struggle ensued when the attacker tried to tie-up Coen, and he was shot twice, and died at the scene. Gerrit Meyer, a member of Agri North West, said that although Linda was tied up she was left unharmed, and managed to untie herself and call the police.
The attacker then fled in the couple's vehicle.
52-year old Ezekiel Gladwin Kgatlanye was arrested after a week long search, and expected to appear in court for bail application.
Coen leaves behind three children, Neil, Frieda and Etienne.
