Arthur Smith married Sarah Jackson some time before June 1666. No marriage record has yet been found. However:

As "Arthur Smith, gentlemen, [sic] of Pagan Creek," in June 1666 he made a deed to a parcel of land "at Blackwater" in Isle of Wight "which belongs to said Arthur Smith by marriage with Sarah, daughter of Richard Jackson, deceased, and grandchild of Mrs. Alice Benett."[3]

Children named in his will:

  1. Thomas Smith
  2. George Smith, b ca 1656
  3. Arthur Smith, b. 1670, Isle of Wight County, Virginia[2]
  4. Mary Smith, b. Aft 1658 - d. Aft 1696, Isle of Wight County, Virginia [2]; married John Hole; 2nd Thomas Pitt[3]
  5. Sarah Smith, married Robert Pitt; 2nd Rev. Andrew Monro;[4] b. Bef 1656-d. 31 May 1725, Isle of Wight County, Virginia [2]
  6. Jane Smith married James Benn[3]

The will of Arthur Smith of the lower parish, dated Dec 2 1696 named legatees: son Thomas; John Hole land bought of Richard Hutchins, reversion to his mother Mary Pitt; son George land adjoining William Thomas and Mrs. Burnett, Mr. Sharpe and Henry Wiggs; if my son Arthur departs this life and comes no more to this country, reversion of his land to my grandson Arthur Benn; Jeremy Fly 200 acres; daughters, Jane Benn, Sarah Monro and Mary Pitt; if without heirs my land for a free school in Newport Parish; wife. Executors: Arthur and George Smith. Overseer, Capt. James Benn. Witnessess: Henry Applewhaite, Boaz Gwin, Robert Brocke. Recorded June 10 1697.

Need to determine if this is the same Arthur Smith and possibly merge with the Allen-Bray side of the Geni tree:

Elizabeth Bray, daughter of James Bray II, married first, Arthur Allen, second, Arthur Smith of Isle of Wight, and third a Mr. Stith. Surry Co. Deed book V, date 17 February, 1748 shows a marriage contract between Arthur Smith the Younger and Elizabeth Allen, widow of dec'd [Richard Allen, confusingly--should be Arthur].

Origins

Arthur Smith I was the third son of Arthur Smith of Blackmore, Essex, England. His date of arrival to Virginia is unknown, but he did represent the district at the House of Burgesses from 1644 to 1645. He had five children: Thomas, Arthur, Richard, Jane and George. Smith died in 1645, and asked to be “buried in the garden by my late and beloved wife.”
