Col. Hugh Lawson, Sr.

Hugh Lawson was married to Mary Moore and they had 9 children. Their daughter Rebecca is my 5th great grandmother, and Mary another daughter is the 3rd great grandmother of Thomas Lanier Williams, better know as Tennessee Williams.

"Sacred to the Memory of Hugh Lawson, Gentlemen. Born Ulster, Ireland 1700. Came to America, (on the merchant ship) George & Ann 1727. Married Mary Moore 1729. Colonial Judge (for)Lunenburg County, Virginia 1746-1756. Moved to N.C. 1759. Died 1772. Ancestor of Patriots."

Baker Cemetery was moved from its original location to Centre Presbyterian Church Graveyard when Lake norman was formed from the Catawba River in 1960. Per Centre Presbyterian Church Cemetery Records.

Hugh Lawson’s will, September of 1764 and probated in November 1772 in Rowan County, NC, names:

• son Roger (who Worth Ray said married Hannah Thompson and came to Georgia)
• daughter Mary (who married General James White)
• son in law George Ewing (who married Catherine Lawson)
• son in law James Henderson (who married Violet Lawson)
• son in law Hugh Barry (who married Cynthia Lawson)
• son in law Thomas Erwin (whose wife’s name has not been located)

Worth Ray also indicates a son, “Hugh Lawson, Jr., who came to Georgia.” We have not found him.
