From the obituary of Col. James Cochran His patriotism was ardent and when Erie was menaced as a consequence of the surrender of Detroit, he repaired thither in command of a volunteer rifle company composed of his friends and neighbors and was signally serviceable in the protection of the ships built by Com. Perry in 1813 until they were safely floated over the bar at the entrance of the harbor. After the close of the war, he was several years elected to a seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and was appointed by Governor Shultz to the several offices of Prothly and Clerk of the several courts; also Register and Recorder which offices he held during nine successive years. For many years he was ruling elder of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, Sugar Creek branch. He served with the 1 Brig, 16 Div. Pa. Mil from 8/26/1812 to 2/25/1815.
