About Col. John William Stewart

JOHN STEWART ★ was born 20 November 1699 to DANIEL STEWART and ELIZABETH FARLEY STEWART at Henrco County, Virginia. In December 1722 at the age of 23 he married MARY BOWMAN at St. Pauls Parish in Henrico County, Virginia. Together they had eight known children: CHARLES F. STEWART, DR. GILBERT STEWART JOHN STEWART, OBEDIENCE "BIDDIE" STEWART, LITTLEBERRY "BERRY" STEWART, DANIEL STEWART, SARAH STEWART, and JANE STEWART. The Stewarts are connected to the WARD family of Henrico County through legal documents and marriage.

February 19, 1741: The following record is of interest as JOSEPH WARD, testator, was the brother of RICHARD WARD, grandfather of BENJAMIN WARD who married SELAH STEWART. The will of JOSEPH WARD of Henrico County was dated February 19, 1741 and probated 1743. He disposed of more than 2,600 acres of land in Henrico, Amelia, and Brunswick (now Charlotte) Counties, Virginia. He directed that debts and funeral charges first be paid and made the following bequests. The original probate records were lost; his will was recorded again on 6 December 1802. To son JOSEPH WARD, 254 acres on south side of Appomattox River below Saylor's Creek in Amelia County; To son, SETH WARD 500 acres on Staunton River in Brunswick County; To son, LEONARD WARD, 500 acres on Staunton River in Brunswick County, and directs that this tract of land ( whole tract on Staunton River) whether more or less that 1500 acres be equally divided between the three brothers, viz: SETH, JOHN & LEONARD; son WILLIAM WARD, all remainder of 730 acres on Little Roanoke in Brunswick County which shall remain unsold after the testator's death; wife and children shall each have an equal part of moveable estate; wife named whole and sole executrix. Witnesses: JOHN STEWART, ARTHUR GILES, MARY STEWART. Executrix: SARAH WARD.

On 30 January 1745/56, JOHN STEWART, son of DANIEL STEWART and ELIZABETH FARLEY, purchased as a resident of Dale Parish, Henrico County, 188 acres from JOSEPH JACKSON in Amelia County.

On 18 August 1750 JOHN STEWART of Dale Parish, Chesterfield County, acquired 300 acres in Amelia County from FIELD JEFFERSON of Lunenburg County. John Stewart lived in Amelia County when he deeded this tract to his son, CHARLES STEWART, on 18 February 1763. On 30 October 1762 JOHN STEWART and his wife, MARY, deeded 180 acres on West Creek to PETER DUPUY, JR.

18 February 1763 JOHN STEWART deeded 300 acres in Amelia County to his son CHARLES STEWART that he acquired in 1758 from Field Jefferson.

6 May 1774: STEWART FAMILY LETTER-Pittsylvania County; letter from John Stewart Jr. to his father John Stewart Sr. Mr. John Stewart Nottoway Parish Amelia County Virginia 6th May 1774
Dear Father John Davis brought your letter today and I write to tell you how pleased I am to hear from you as well as to share a few lines about your family here in Pittsylvania. Susanah as you know from brother John Kelly was very sickly and has been slow to mend. She is a good and dutyful wife and I must confess my fear was that she might never be any better. As for the children our Cely has taken to herself a husband since I wrote you Mr. Benjamin Ward. They stay with his brother Daniel Ward but talk much of going to Carolina. Jack tends to run wild much to the worry of his Mother and this does not help to better her poor state of health. Dan now stands as tall as brother Berry and is a favorite with the ladys. He is a fine son and in his conduct is much like brother Charles. Our Mary is a great comfort. Never was a girl more properly named for Mother being a most sensable girl and since Susanahs illness has taken charge of her Mothers dutys. It has been near five years since our Jesse left us and never is the day we do not think of our dear boy lost at such a tender age. As for myself I am in perfect health. I close with our respects to you and Mother and all the family. May God keep and bless you all. Your son John Stewart Pittsylvania County Virginia (Source: copied from a letter owned by Mr. Joseph Ward of Watauga County, North Carolina (now deceased. JOHN STEWART died testate Amelia County remembering wife, MARY STEWART, one daughter, and four sons. He appointed his friend, DANIEL FARLEY, and his son, CHARLES STEWART, executors. Joseph Jennings, Samuel Thompson, and John Howson witnessed his will dated 13 Jan. 1777. Will of JOHN STEWART of Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co., VA 13 January 1777 Wife MARY STEWART, son LITTLEBERRY, CHARLES, JOHN, DANIEL, OBEDIENCE, SARAH & JANE STEWART. John was the oldest and Littleberry the youngest. Friend DANIEL FARLEY and son Charles, executors. Witnesses Jennings, Thompson and Howson. Inventory 1779. It has been said that John gave his sword to his son, John, who gave it to General John Stewart, who gave it to his daughter, Parmelia Stewart Perkins. Parmelia is supposed to have been buried with the sword at Cherry Hill, Georgia. Her grave marker is in the Steven's Family Cemetery. However, she is buried across the road two blocks wouth, 1 block east. The location of the Stewart Family Cemetery and the Old Family Plantation at Cherry Hill is 3.3 miles south of Maxey's GA.

Will of John Stewart of Nottoway Parish, Amelia Co., VA Wife Mary; sons Littleberry, Charles, John, Daniel; daughters, Obedience, Sarah, and Jane. John the oldest and Littleberry the youngest. Friend Daniel Farley and son Charles, executors. Witnesses Jennings, Thompson and Howson. Inventory 1779.

In 1782 in Amelica County, his wife, MARY STEWART was listed as Head of Household of two whites and two blacks.

CELIA (SELAH) STEWART (wife of BENJAMIN WARD, II who died 1820 in Ashe County, NC) was the daughter of JOHN STEWART John Stewart who was in Pittsylvania CO VA abt 1774 and granddaughter of JOHN and MARY BOWMAN STEWART of Amelia CO VA. This John was not John Jaural Stewart, an entirely different line fwho came from Amherst CO VA, this line mostly went to GA. A man named Richard Stewart has insisted that his John Jaural was the John Stewart, son of Mary Bowman and he is wrong, dead wrong; it has been not only proved by documentation but through several DNA tests, he knows it. We have 4 men from the Henrico/Chesterfield/Amelia Co lines that match, 2 from the Amherst Co lines. The 2 men including Richard do not even come near matching (Amherst lines). I would say since JOHN STEWART born abt 1669-1700 who married MARY BOWMAN Dec 1722 St Pauls Church Henrico CO VA, was the first cousin of SARAH STEWART, dau of JOHN STEWART, JR and MICHAL BALLOW, that married JOSEPH WARD, son of SETH WARD, that this is the direction you would need to follow. Sarah Stewart Ward and John Stewart,( Sarah would have been Johns 2nd cousin) son of John and Mary Bowman Stewart was born anywhere between 1723-1730, this is probably Selahs father. We have never been able to find his wife nor a child for John. There was a William Stewart, Rev War soldier in Henry/Franklin CO VA and his line matches the Henrico Line (DNA), this Wm was thought the be the son of William Stewart and wife Mary of Chesterfield CO VA to Amelia CO VA. William SR died with a will in Amelia Co VA abt 1774, his wife Mary died by 1780. He had- John, William born abt 1760, perfect age to be the Rev War soldier in Henry/Franklin CO. William who died in Amelia was the son of Edward Stewart and Martha TANNER of Henrico/Chesterfield CO VA. William the Rev War soldier lived on the Blackwater River next to John, Daniel Stewart, Daniel Ward, Peter Blakenship and Jesse Clay. A search in Bedford Co Deeds would be highly recommended as Blackwater River crosses Bedford and Johns brother Daniel lived in Southern Bedford Co near the Franklin Co line. Tax lists from the 1780s show both John and Daniel enumerated in Bedford Co as well. No tax list to my knowledge exist from the 1770s in Bedford Co. Both Daniel and John were buying land by 1779, in present day Franklin and Bedford (priorly Henry CO VA). Areas include, Fox Trap Branch in Bedford Co and the Blackwater River in Franklin/Bedford. See the 1782 PPtax list for Henry CO: . You will see 2 John Stewarts SR and JR. John Stewart SR would be your man. He is not far from Daniel Ward. John Stewart JR is not his son, he is his nephew, son of Daniel who would appear on Bedford Co lists. That JOHN was born Jan 1757, Amelia CO VA a Rev War soldier, son of Daniel and Anna. So, you can see he was alive in 1782. By the way, the first John Stewart to own land in Pittsylvania CO VA sold it in 1756 to his brother Charles. This land was on Elkhorn Creek an he was my GGGGG grandfather. (Source: Teresa Del Rios, Researcher, provided to Brenda Reed)
