In 1788, Sir John Talbot gave the two acres of land used for the Smyrna Presbyterian Church and burial ground. The acreage was taken from his vast estate. He was a descendant of the Earl of Shrewsbury and the father of Matthew Talbot, who later became the governor of Georgia. Sir John was also the ancestor of W. H. T. Walker, Confederate General killed in the Battle of Atlanta.
