Statement of Margaret Janes Weems Carter, of Huron, South Dakota, on Sept. 28th, 1895 (at which time Marfaret was about 70 years of age).

"My Father's name was James Swan Weems, He was born near Baltimore, Maryland in 1795 and was a son of Col. John Weems of Maryland, and Mary Swan Gale, a widow of Capt. Gale, and the fourth wife of Col. John Weems."

THE WEEMS FAMILY


David and James Weems (Wemyss), sons of the Earl of Wemyss, were brought to America by their maternal uncle, Dr. William Loch.They settled in Maryland.

James was the father of John, a Colonel in the Revolution.Col. John Weems was married four times.His first wife, a Miss Crompton, left two sons: John Crompton Weems and William Locke Weems.Col. Weems' 2nd and 3rd wives died without children.His fourth wife was Mrs. Mary Swan Gale, the widow of Captain Gale.

Col. John Weems moved from Maryland to Louisville, Kentucky in 1812.They settled at Cave Hill, where Col. John died.After his death, the widow moved to Uniontown, Pennsylvania.They (Col John and Mary Swan) were the parents of the following children:

  2. Elizabeth Weems Norton
  3. George Washington Weems
  4. Catherine "Kitty" Weems Nichols
  5. Alice "Elsie" Weems Randolph
