CANNON--Linden Kinder Cannon, Jr., Col (Ret.) died on January 28, 1999, in Jacksonville, Florida. "L.K." was born on September 18, 1914, in Sarasota, Florida, and grew up in Lake City, Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1936 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. Upon graduation, he was commissioned a 2d Lt. in the U.S. Army. L.K. was called to active duty in 1941 with the 20th Field Artillery of the 4th Infantry Division.
During 1944 and 1945 he served in World War II and saw combat in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944 the liberation of Paris, the Battle of the Bulge, the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest and the occupation of Germany. After many duty stations in the United States and overseas, he retired as a Colonel with over 30 years service. His decorations included the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star with Oak leaf cluster. After retirement from military service, L.K. moved to Gainesville, Florida, where he served as Executive Director of the United Way and then as Vice President of Atlantic First National Bank of Gainesville. While in Gainesville he held leadership positions with the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce and The Retired Officers Association.
L.K. and his wife, Winona Williamson Cannon ("Nonie"), moved to Crystal River, Florida, in 1978. While there, he established the Inglis, Florida, branch of Levy County State Bank and later co-founded a real estate company, Black & Cannon Realty, During his 18 years in Crystal River, L.K. was a member of the Vestry of St. Anne's Episcopal Church; Board of Governors of Seven Rivers Community Hospital; Board of Trustees, Central Florida Community College, Ocala; and Board of Directors, Civitan Regional Blood Bank. He moved to Jacksonville in 1995 to be near his children and their families, Nonie, his wife of 60 years, died on November 12, 1998. L.K. is survived by three children (and their spouses), Selby Cannon Kaiser (Fred), Lina Cannon McMorrow (Tom) and Linden Kinder Cannon, III (Barbara); six grandchildren; Thomas F. McMorrow, Jr., Christopher C. McMorrow (Barbara), Thomas C. Kasier (Karen), Lara E. Kaiser, Kimberly A. Cannon and Linden Kinder Cannon, IV (Cynthia), and three great grandchildren, Tyler, Jack and Harrison McMorrow.
A committal service will be scheduled at a later date at the Columbarium, St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Crystal River. Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice Northeast, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
