Marshall David Craton attended West Point Military Academy and worked as a medical doctor in RUtherfordton, NC. DUring the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army as Captain of Company A, 27th North Carolina Infantry Regiment, then Lt. Colonel of 35th North Carolina Infantry Regiment and finally Colonel of 50th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He resigned from his position in 1862 due to diarrhea and dysentery.
