According to Bradshaw, Joseph Morton was born in Henrico County on December 27, 1709. He came at an early age to Amelia County as a marksman for the Randolph's. As a marksman, he sought out desirable lands and recommended them for patenting. He also selected lands for himself and acquired 5553 acres in the wilderness for his employers. He requested that a road be built from Bush River to Buffalo in 1738 and was made surveyor of this job when the request was granted. On March 26, 1739 he acquired a patent on 1200 acres on the Briery River, a few miles from the present location of Hampden-Sydney College. This's land was originally in Amelia County but is now Prince Edward County. Joseph and Agnes lived at this plantation for about 16 years. In 1754, when Prince Edward County was formed, Joseph was one of the first Justices. He and his family lived at Slate Hill at the time. He was defeated for the House of Burgesses and was also a vestryman at Nottoway Parish at the time.

Joseph moved is family to Little Roanoke Bridge in Lunenburg County about 1755. This was frontier country and the nearest neighbor was thirty miles away. In 1765, this plantation fell into Charlotte County as it was formed out of Lunenburg County. He was named one of the first Justices for Charlotte County. He lived out is life at this home.

His former home, Slate Hill, was now occupied by his daughter and her husband, Nathaniel Venable. They lived there when the Presbytery met in the office which stood in the yard of Slate Hill and made plans which resulted in the building of Hampden-Sydney College. Joseph was active in the founding of this college and in helping to raise funds for it. While the original house is gone, the office now sits on the campus of Hampden-Sydney College.

Joseph was Justice of the Peace in Charlotte County in 1769. He was a member of the Committee of Safety for the county during the Revolutionary War. He and Agnes furnished supplies to the American Army during the war. All of their son's served as officers in the American Army during the war. DAR Ancestor #: A081839
