About Richard Barnes

It is unlikely that the parents attached here to Richard Barnes are correct. The mother listed here, Elizabeth Rousby, died in 1757, 6 years before his birth. The subsequent wife of Abraham Barnes, Sarah Ball, would have been 58 when Richard was born...so not likely his mother. Perhaps they are grandparents? No proof has been found. This Richard was not mentioned in Abraham Barnes' 1785 will.

Enlisted as a private in 1781 for 3 months under Captain Owen Reubel, and Col. Colleway from Virginia. Then he served 10 months as a Minute Man under Edward Eggleston, Col. Davison. He lived in Henry County, Virginia, when he enlisted. He applied for pension on October 6, 1845, but died before pension was granted.

Deposition of service on record in Revolutionary War records, Ref. 526. (Information collected by DAR)

Son of Abraham Barnes & Elizabeth Rousby. No children

The Evening Post, New York, New York; 05-05-1804 (Saturday paper so death was April 29th 1804)

Died At Baltimore, on Sunday last, Colonel Richard Barnes of St. Mary's county, Maryland. In the death of this respectable citizen his friends have sustained a mournful, and his country an irreparable loss. His will declares all his negroes, amounting to 3 or 400, free three years after his death, provided they behave themselves well.
