Colonel Richard Jones was born in 1718, in Bristol Parish, Prince George, Virginia. He was the son of Richard Jones Jr. (1691-1759) and Sarah (Stratton) Jones (1683-1728).

Richard and Elizabeth were married June 1744, in Amelia County, Virginia.[1][2]

His will was dated 19 August 1778, and it was probated in the October Court 1778. Age: 59, 1778, Nottoway Parish, Amelia, Virginia, United States.[3]

Richard Jones wrote his will, dated 19 August 1778, and it was probated in the October Court 1778. Age: 59, 1778, Nottoway Parish, Amelia, Virginia, United States.[3]

  • In the Name of God Amen, I Richard Jones of the Parish of Nottoway in the County of Amelia being sick in body but perfect in mind and judgment thanks be given to God do make and ordain this my Last Will & Testament in manner and form following
  • Imprimis first after my just debts are paid I lend unto my loving wife Elizabeth Jones the following slaves, Viz: Jack, Stephen, James, Jane, Nan, Stewart, Cuff Stewart & John Stewart, also the land and plantation I now live on, it being a tract of four hundred acres, during her natural life & at her decease the aforesd salves and their future increase, to be equally divided between my children Margaret Jones, Elizabeth Royall, Sarah Jones, Rachel Jones, Thomas and William Jones to them and their heirs forever, and the aforesaid tract of land to my son William Jones to him & his heirs forever
  • Item I also give & bequeath to my daughter Amey Cook the slaves she has now in possesion with their future increase, excep Bob a fellow son to great man who is to return to the estate to her and her heirs forever
  • Item I give to my son Richard Jones all the slaves & stock he has in possession with their future increase to him & his heirs forever
  • Item I give & bequeath to my son Thomas Jones all my lands on Deep Creek that I purchased of Robert Munford & James Hudson to him & his heirs forever
  • Item I also give & bequeath to my son Wm Jones all my lands adjoining the lands I now live on to him & his heirs forever
  • Item my will & desire is that if either of my sons, Thomas Jones or Wm Jones should die before they arrive to the age of twenty one years, that the surviving one should have the lands I have willd & devised to my son Wm Jones & my lands on Deep Creek which I have wlld & devised to my son Thomas Jones to be equally divided between my son Richard Jones and the surviving one, when he comes to the age of twenty years, to them and their heirs forever
  • Item I give & bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Royal the slaves she has in possession also a negro fellow called Pompey to her and her heirs forever
  • Item I give & bequeath to my loveing wife & my five children viz: Margaret, Sarah, Rachel, Thomas & William Jones all my furniture to be ? of to them as my wife thinks fit as the children come of age or marry
  • Item I give to my loving wife my riding chair and horses, known by the names of James & ball, also Amara & colt known by the name of Fany, two yoke of work stears, twenty head of cattle, twenty head of hogs & fifteen head of sheep, the oxen, cattle, hogs & sheep to be those she will chose out of the whole stock, all of which with their future increase, I give to her during her natural life or widowhood and at her decease or marriage to be equally divided among my six youngest children
  • Item my will and desire is that my land in Prince Edward County be sold by my Executors hereafter to be mentioned & the money arising from such sale together with the cash in hand & due on bonds or otherwise to be equally divided among my six youngest children Viz: Margaret Jones, Elizabeth Royall, Sarah, Rachel, Thomas & Wm Jones
  • Item I give and bequeath all the rest of my estate not already mentioned to my five children (viz) Margaret, Sarah, Rachel, Thomas & William Jones to them & their heirs forever to be equally didvided among them by my executors herafter to be mentioned & each child to have their part as they marry or come of age to twenty one years & if any money should be raised by the said estate, that my executors may lay it out in slaves as they think proper & such slaves to be divided as aforesaid & if either of the aforesaid children should die before they marry or arrive to the age of twenty one years then the whole of my children to divide that part of the estate which would have been allotted to by this clause to them and their heirs forever
  • Item my Will and Desire is that my Wife and Children be maintained out of the whole estate untill they marry or take of their respective parts.
  • Item I appoint my Brother Peter Jones, Stephen Cooke Littleberry Royall & my son Richard Jones my executors to this my last will and testament and if any disputes should arise between my children or between my wife & children concerning any clause or part of a clause of this my last will and testament all such disputes to be determined by my executors & their determination shall be final as to all such disputes
  • In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & affixed my seal thereby revoking & diusannulling all former will by me made, this seventeenth day of August in the year of Our Lord Christ one Thousand seven hundred and Seventy Eight
