Robert La Tourette Cavenaugh, 72, a retired colonel in the Army Medical Corps and a former chief of the Maryland bureau of laboratories administration, died of meningitis at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. - Washington Post
Col. Cavenaugh was a career Army officer, like his father and grandfather. He did not attend West Point as they did; he went to Cornell in Ithaca and then Cornell Medical School in New York City. While there he met Mikki.
On his retirement in 1964 he became head of the Maryland state laboratory system, a position which he held eleven years. Thereafter he consulted with laboratories in the area.
Dr. Cavenaugh -- either title was used frequently -- was active in the church, donated time to giving Boy Scout physicals before summer camp. He never pressured his children to follow him into medicine, although David has been a Health Policy Analyst for most of his career.
