Colonel Abraham Barnes was born in either Richmond County, or Westmoreland Co.,, VA.. According to a deed filed in Westmoreland County, VA in 1744, he was the son and heir of Thomas Barnes, deceased.

He is the Abraham Barnes, as seems most likely, who, sometime after 1743, married Sarah Ball, widow of Dennis McCarty, also a vestryman of Truro Parish. There was a Richard Barnes of York County, Virginia, in the seventeenth century (his widow married in 1675) who may have been of the same family.
