Colonel Henry Keteltas, who died at his home, No. 37 St Mark's Place, on Saturday afternoon, was a well-known Veteran of the War of the Rebellion.

The founder of this family in this country, Jan Evartson Keteltas, came to what was then New-Amsterdam from Holland in 1649.

His descendants have been identified with the civil and military history of the State, and were among the founders of the Historical Society and the New York Society Library.

Colonel Keteltas was born in this city in 1838 and was the eldest son of Eugene Keteltas. He received his education in Columbia College, and after being graduated from that institution, travelled extensively in Europe, returning in time to take an active part in the Civil War.

At the first Battle of Bull Run, he served as a Private soldier in the ranks of Company F, 71st Regiment, National Guard. On August 5, 1861, he was appointed Captain in the 15th U.S. Infantry, and he served with distinction in the Ohio Campaign. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, but was able to return to duty within three months, and was present at all the engagements of the Army of the Cumberland to April 18, 1864, when he was assigned to duty at the War Department, Washington, on the staff of Major-General James B Fry, Provost-Marshal-General. He was afterward in command of Fort Morgan, Mobile Bay, and Mount Vernon Arsenal Alabama. He resigned from the Army on June 17, 1867, with brevets as Major for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battle of Shiloh, and Lt-Col for gallant and meritorious conduct at the Battles of Chickamauga and Mission Ridge.

Soon afterward, he started on a tour around the world, and visited the camps of the German and French armies on the eve of the Franco-Prussian War. He was much impressed by the demoralization of the French and prophesied their defeat. His last illness was a long and painful one, and was aggravated by the wound that he received at Shiloh.

He was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, George Washington Post, G.A.R.; the St Nicholas Society, the Holland Society and the Union League Club.

His mother was a Miss Gardiner, and he inherited a valuable estate in this city.

Colonel Keteltas leaves two brothers and two sisters. One of his sisters is the wife of U.S. Senator George Peabody Wetmore, of Rhode Island.
