TIPTON FAMLY IN TENNESSEE.

"Colonel John Tipton was married 1750-1 to Mary Butler, daughter of Thomas Bulter, who was killed by the Indians on his farm on Cedar Creek, Shenandoah county, Va., at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. She bore him nine sons, to-wit; Samuel, Benjamin, Abraham, William, Isaac, Jacob, John, Thomas, Jonathan. Mary (Butler) Tipton died in Shenandoah coutny, June 8, 1776. July 22, 1777, Colonel Tipton was married to Marth (Denton) Moore, widow of Dr. James Moore, Shenandoah county. By her he had one son, who was killed in Clark's Expediton against the Indians 1782. Colonel Tipton is said to have had several daughters; whether by the first or second marriage is unknown, as are their names also. Col. John Tipton died, it is said, August, 1813, and, with his wife Martha, is buried on his farm on Sinking Creek, on the hill above the historic old house that still stands pratically unchanged since its erection before 1800. Here after the death of old Col. John Tipton, his son John Tipton of Sullivan county, lived until his death in 1831, after which the home was sold to David Haynes and became the home of Tennessee's silver-tongued orator, Landon C. Haynes.".....

JONATHAN TIPTON, Jr., the youngest son of Colonel John Tipton and his wife Mary (Butler) Tipton, was born June 8, 1776, at which time his mother died. Jonathan Tipton Jr. was married twice; first to Lavina Williams, daughter of Lucretia (Adams) Williams, sister of President John Adams. Lavina died September 24, 1836, and Jonathan married a second time, his widow, Margaret, surviving him." "Of his thirteen children, his oldest son John Butler Tipton was the first clerk of Monroe county,...." " his young brother Jonathan Caswell deputy to the general surveyor." "His son, William Sharon Tipton, late of Cleveland, Tennessee, was in 1891 United States Marshal. Rev. Lorenzo Dowe Tipton, fifth son of Jonathan Tipton Jr., was a Baptist minister and Chaplain for the 5th Mounted Regiment in 1865."

Jonathan served in his brother Jacob's company of militia in 1791 and was made a colonel of the Light Horse regiment in the Carter Co. Militia in 1822. He was elected as a member of the legislature from Carter and Washington Counties in 1807 and 1809. In 1810, he moved to Blount Co. and settled at Clover Hill. He represented Blount Co. in the state legislature from 1811 to 1821 and represented both Blount and Monroe Counties in 1825 and 1826. Jonathan moved to Monroe Co. around 1827 and settled at Eve's Mill. He represented Monroe Co. in the legislature during the years 1827 and 1829.

53. COLONEL JONATHAN4 TIPTON (JOHN3, JONATHAN2, JONATHAN1) was born 08 Jun 1776 in Shenandoah, VA, and died 08 Nov 1858 in Monroe County, Tennessee. He married (1) LAVINIA ADAMS WILLIAMS 15 Mar 1795 in Carter County, Tennessee, daughter of EDMUND WILLIAMS and LUCRETIA ADAMS. She was born 28 Jul 1776 in Carter County, Tennessee, and died 24 Sep 1836 in Monroe County, Tennessee. He married (2) MARGARET SINGLETON24 05 Oct 1837 in Blount County, TN. She was born 18 Feb 1786 in Tennessee, and died 30 Oct 1866 in Tennessee.

LUCRETIA WILLIAMS AND JONATHAN TIPTON-AGREEMENT

     Agreement, September 13, 1802, between Lucretia Williams, of Carter County v. Jonathan Tipton: 

     The said LUCRETIA WILLIAMS does consent and agree with the said       Tipton to live with him her life time, for which support the said LUCRETIA WILLIAMS does give unto the said TIPTON for his proper use all of her worldly property and estate. Signed:

He settled in Monroe County,Tennessee, where he left a will dated September 25, 1843, in which he       named his children and his wife MARGARET-he having married a second time, after the death of LAVINIA WILLIAMS, his first wife.

Tipton, Jonathan Col. Nov 26, 1858 Athens Post: aged 82, for last thirty odd years a citizen of Monroe County; died at his residence on Tenn. River Monday the 8th inst. His father emigrated to this country when he was quite young from Shenandoah Co., Va. member of the State legislature for 21 sessions. Leaves large family of children.

1114 Col. John Tipton came to Tenn. in Oct. 1782. His early power struggle with John Sevier is mentioned in all the Tenn. histories. Col. Tipton was born in 1732 on the Shenandoah in Va. His parents were Jonathan Tipton (b. 3-25-1699 d. abt 1759) and Sarah Pierce. He married 1st in 1753 Mary Butler who died 6-8-1776. Her father was killed by the Indians. His 2nd wife was Martha Moore.

Abstracted Will of Col. Jonathan Tipton

1116 Jonathan Tipton made his will on 9-23-1843 and it was probated in the Dec. term of Court in 1858. The will is not prcisely worded and probably for that reason it was contested "(1) to my wife Margaret the estate and property she brought into the marriage. (The slaves) Burrell, Rose, Sophy and her (Sophy's) three children, Manervy, Sary, Simon and all the other property I got with her in marriage. Also one half the land I live on containing 600 acres, also the buildings, also the note on John Stephens for $193, the note on Robert Porter for $488, and the note on Ruth and Lillard for $385. Also farming equipment and a years provisions.

"The balance to my children: (2) Mary Ann Weir $600 (3) John B. $600 (4) Edmund W. $600 (5) Willie B. $600 (6) Lucretia Bradford $600 (7) Tryphenia Wear $700 (8) Sarah Wilkinson $200 (9) Lorenzo D. $100 (10) Pleasant M. $600 (11) Ellridge G. (no amt. named) (12) Jonathan C. $600 (13) Quincy A. $600 (14) Lavina and Calvin Hall $700."

William Haskell and John B. Tipton were named executors and the will witnessed by John McClain and John Rider.

On 1-28-1853 Jonathan Tipton added a codicil to his will in which he staed that although his grandson George B. Tipton was made equal by law with on of his own children he thought it proper to make him equal with his granchildren who were the children of John and Sarah Wilkinson. John Rider and John McClain also witnessed the codicil.
