1114 Col. John Tipton came to Tenn. in Oct. 1782. His early power struggle with John Sevier is mentioned in all the Tenn. histories. Col. Tipton was born in 1732 on the Shenandoah in Va. His parents were Jonathan Tipton (b. 3-25-1699 d. abt 1759) and Sarah Pierce. He married 1st in 1753 Mary Butler who died 6-8-1776. Her father was killed by the Indians. His 2nd wife was Martha Moore.

Abstracted Will of Col. Jonathan Tipton
1116 Jonathan Tipton made his will on 9-23-1843 and it was probated in the Dec. term of Court in 1858. The will is not prcisely worded and probably for that reason it was contested "(1) to my wife Margaret the estate and property she brought into the marriage. (The slaves) Burrell, Rose, Sophy and her (Sophy's) three children, Manervy, Sary, Simon and all the other property I got with her in marriage. Also one half the land I live on containing 600 acres, also the buildings, also the note on John Stephens for $193, the note on Robert Porter for $488, and the note on Ruth and Lillard for $385. Also farming equipment and a years provisions.
"The balance to my children: (2) Mary Ann Weir $600 (3) John B. $600 (4) Edmund W. $600 (5) Willie B. $600 (6) Lucretia Bradford $600 (7) Tryphenia Wear $700 (8) Sarah Wilkinson $200 (9) Lorenzo D. $100 (10) Pleasant M. $600 (11) Ellridge G. (no amt. named) (12) Jonathan C. $600 (13) Quincy A. $600 (14) Lavina and Calvin Hall $700."
William Haskell and John B. Tipton were named executors and the will witnessed by John McClain and John Rider.
On 1-28-1853 Jonathan Tipton added a codicil to his will in which he staed that although his grandson George B. Tipton was made equal by law with on of his own children he thought it proper to make him equal with his granchildren who were the children of John and Sarah Wilkinson. John Rider and John McClain also witnessed the codicil.

Jonathan Tipton, Jr., the youngest son of Colonel John Tipton and his wife Mary (Butler) Tipton, was born June 8, 1776, at which time his mother died. Jonathan Tipton Jr. was married twice; first to LAVINA WILLIAMS, daughter of LUCRETIA (ADAMS) WILLIAMS, sister of President John Adams. LAVINA died September 24, 1836, and Jonathan married a second time, his widow, Margaret, surviving him." "Of his thirteen children, his oldest son John Butler Tipton was the first clerk of Monroe county,...." " his young brother Jonathan Caswell duputy to the general surveyor." "His son, William Sharon Tipton, late of Cleveland, Tennessee, was in 1891 United States Marshal. Rev. Lorenzo Dowe Tipton, fifth son of Jonathan Tipton Jr., was a Baptist mnister and Chaplain for the 5th Mounted Regiment in 1865."
