About Colonel Philemon Prindle Baldwin, II (USA)

Colonel Philemon Prindle Baldwin

He was a U.S. Civil War Colonel in the Union Army, and was killed in action (KIA) at the Battle of Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia.

Philemon Baldwin was a resident of Madison, Indiana where he ran a farm implement business. During the Civil War Baldwin enlisted in the Union Army on April 19, 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant and was later commissioned into company A of the (3-Month) 6th Indiana Infantry. He was Mustered Out on August 2, 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana. On September 12, 1861 he was commissioned to Company A of the (3-year) 6th Indiana Infantry.

He was killed on September 19, 1863 at Chickamauga, Georgia while rallying his brigade. Grabbing the colors of the 6th Indiana, he swung his horse around toward the enemy and cried, "Follow Me!" He was answered by a volley of bullets. Sadly, his body was never recovered. It's believed that his body is buried with the other unknown at Chickamauga.

The marker is near Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in Catoosa County. Marker can be reached from Brotherton Road east of Alexander Bridge Road, on the left when traveling east. This marker is located in the National Military Park that preserves the site of the Chickamauga Battlefield, and is situated along one of the park hiking trails just north of the Winfrey Field. According to the location information provided by the National Park Service, “Monument located within the Chickamauga Battlefield in corner of Winfrey Field.
