Biography

PHEBE OSGOOD,[1] b. at Andover, 26 May 1733 daughter of Timothy and Mary (Russell) Osgood; d. at Methuen, 2 Mar 1797; m. about 1757, THOMAS POOR, b. at Andover 19 Jul 1732 son of Thomas and Mary (Adams) Poor; Thomas d. at Methuen, 23 Sep 1804. Thomas married second Miriam Sargent.

Thomas Poor was the captain of a company of Minute Men in Col. James Frye’s regiment and marched at the alarm 19 April 1775. He received promotion to Major in May 1775. He was commissioned as Colonel on 13 May 1778 and was in command of a regiment raised for service at Peekskill.[2]

In his will written 11 September 1804, Thomas Poor bequeathed to beloved wife Miriam use of part of the house and provisions for her support to be provided annually, and the household furniture that was hers at the time of marriage. Son Stephen received five dollars which completes his full portion. Son Caleb receives one-sixty-eighth part of the land of the original Shelburne grant and a 100-acre lot number fifteen and one undivided half-part of lot twenty-eight and additional parcels. Daughter Polly Lovejoy wife of Abiel Lovejoy receive 100 acres in East Andover. Daughter Hannah Whittier wife of William Whittier receives 100 acres also in East Andover and daughter Phebe Plummer wife of Moses Plummer receives a similar bequest. Daughter Sarah receives use and occupancy of a chamber in the house and other provisions for her support while she is unmarried. Daughter Nancy Frye wife of Robinson Frye receives a 58-acre lot and daughter Suzee Frye wife of Daniel Frye receives a 100-acre lot. The remaining household items is to be equally divided among the daughters. The remaining outlands are to be sold and what is owed him collected and the remainder to be divided among the children except Stephen who has received his full amount. Sons Enoch and Thomas receive the remainder of the estate real and personal to divide equally and they are also named executors. After the sale of the outlands, the total value of the personal estate was $3,294.10.[3]

On 8 July 1806, son Stephen, then of Andover, sold his property in Methuen to his brothers Enoch and Thomas for $400. On 8 June 1815, Enoch and Thomas along with Thomas’s wife Prudence sold 48 acres of property to Asa Currier for $400.[4]

Phebe Osgood and Thomas Poor were parents of ten children. Sons Enoch and Caleb settled in North Carolina, although Enoch returned to Massachusetts.

iii PHEBE POOR, b. at Andover, 3 Jul 1761; m. at Andover, 22 Nov 1796, as his second wife, MOSES PLUMMER, b. at Rowley, 24 Jan 1744/5 son of Thomas and Bethiah (Tenney) Plummer. Moses was first married to Hannah Hale.

iv STEPHEN POOR, b. at Andover, 16 Feb 1763; d. at Newburyport, 17 Jul 1812; m. 1st at Andover, 25 Oct 1795, ELIZABETH DUSTIN, b. at Windham, NH, 8 Sep 1773 daughter of Peter and Betty (Sawyer) Dustin;[6] Elizabeth d. about 1800. Stephen m. 2nd 24 Aug 1801, MARY PLUMMER, b. about 1782 (based on age at time of death); Mary d. at Andover, 2 Dec 1845. Mary married second Joseph Cummings at Andover on 19 Dec 1815.

v ENOCH POOR, b. at Andover, 20 Apr 1765; d. at Methuen, 17 Mar 1834; m. at Rowan County, NC, 1794 (bond 8 Apr 1794), PRUDENCE BREVARD, b. in NC, 4 Jan 1772 daughter of Robert and Sarah (Craig) Brevard; Prudence d. at Methuen, 29 Jul 1850. Enoch and Prudence had five children in North Carolina and then Enoch returned to Methuen.

vi CALEB POOR, b. at Andover, 28 Mar 1767; d. after 1813 (living in Morganton, NC in 1810); m. Jul 1796, POLLY MIRA AVERY, b. at Burke County, NC, 24 Aug 1779 daughter of Waightstill and Leah (Probart) Avery;[7] Polly Mira d. at Henderson County, NC, 20 Feb 1857. Caleb and Polly divorced in 1813.[8] Polly Mira married second Jacob Summey in 1823.

vii NANCY POOR, b. about 1771; d. at Methuen, 9 Jan 1855; m. at Methuen, 25 Oct 1797, ROBINSON FRYE, b. at Methuen, 28 May 1771 son of James and Mehitable (Robinson) Frye; Robinson d. at Methuen, 5 Dec 1816.

viii SARAH POOR, b. about 1772 (based on age 65 at time of death); d. at Andover, 16 Dec 1837; m. at Andover, 29 Sep 1825, as his third wife, ISAAC MOOAR, b. at Andover, 16 Feb 1759 son of Abraham and Lydia (Abbott) Mooar; Isaac d. at Andover, 12 Jan 1832. Isaac was first married to Sarah Abbott and second married to Lydia Cawley.

ix THOMAS POOR, baptized at Andover, 27 Mar 1774; d. at Methuen 20 Oct 1815. Thomas does not seem to have married. His estate was administered by Enoch Poor. The accounting of the estate includes costs of Enoch Poor for providing boarding, support, and a nurse for Thomas from 4 Nov 1811 through 25 oct 1815.

x SUSANNAH POOR, b. at Methuen, 14 Jan 1778; d. at Methuen, 5 Feb 1834; m. at Methuen, 17 Dec 1795, DANIEL FRYE, b. at Methuen, 7 Jun 1773 son of James and Mehitable (Robinson) Frye; Daniel d. at Methuen, 14 Oct 1837. After Susannah’s death, Daniel married Phebe Carleton. Susannah and Daniel did not have children of their own, but adopted two children, Daniel Frye and Susan who married Josiah Osgood. In his 1837 will, Daniel makes provision for his wife Phebe and left the bulk of the estate to adopted son Daniel Frye and adopted daughter Susan wife of Josiah Osgood.[9]
