Valentine was baptized on October 23, 1724 and was the son of Martha Wood Jackson (Cox) and Henry Wood (q. v.), and in 1757 succeeded his father as clerk of Goochland County. Valentine was county clerk for Goochland County for 28 years from 1753 to 1781. County clerks played a very important role in maintaining the records of deeds, the county court and annual taxes. In many counties, it was a lucrative job because of the fees for services and was sometimes passed on from a father to a son who worked as assistant clerk and knew more about the records than anyone else when the father needed to be replaced.

He was one of the first Justices appointed in Albemarle County, before it was divided from Goochland in 1744, and he served as a Colonel in the county militia during the American Revolution.

He married Lucy Henry, (the sister of Patrick Henry) on January 3, 1764 in Virginia. He and Lucy were the parents of nine known children:

  • Hamish Wood (1764-1826)
  • Henry Wood (1765-1814)
  • William Wood (1765-1824)
  • Sarah Wood (1767-?)
  • Martha Wood Southall (1768-1834)
  • Mary Valentine Wood Johnston (1769-1825)
  • Valentine Wood Jr. (1772-?)
  • Lucy Wood Carter (1774-1837)
  • Jane Wood (1775-1810)
  • John Henry Wood (1776-1850)

His daughter Mary married Judge Peter Johnston. They were the parents of General Joseph E. Johnston.

Brother of: Sarah Wood Pryor, Henry Wood, Jr., Martha Cox Meriweather, and Judy Wood.
Half brother of: Abel Jackson.

Valentine signed his will March 10, 1781 and it was recorded in September, 1781. In 1782, his 2,226 acres were entered in the land tax list as his posthumous estate.

There is also on record the will of William Cox, dated February 10, 1711, probated June, 1712, which mentions son Stephen, daughters Martha, Mary, Prudence, Judith, Elizabeth, and wife Sarah.

There is recorded in Goochland County the will of Sarah Cox, dated March 26, 1726, probated January 20, 1747. She mentions son Stephen, daughters Edith, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary, Prudence, and Judith. She appoints Henry Wood her executor, and the will is in the handwriting of Henry Wood (the clerk of Goochland County at that date, and father of Colonel Valentine Wood), who married Lucy Henry, and was the grandfather of General Joseph Eggelston Johnston, Beverly Johnston, of Abingdon, Valentine Wood Southall, and Dr. Phillip Southall, of Amelia, and whose daughters married Edward Carter, of Blenheim, Albermarle County; William Meriwether, grandson of Colonel Nicholas Meriwether of Hanover; and William Pryor.

In the genealogy of the Wood family, it is stated that Henry Wood (for forty-odd years an attorney-at-law and county clerk of Goochland) married Martha Cox (Cocke) on 13 October 1723, at Bremo Plantation in Henrico County. Martha Cox, says the genealogy, was the daughter of William and Sarah Cox of Henrico County.
