About Colonel William Wesley Forbes, (CSA)
Successor to Elizabeth Van Lew as Postmaster of Richmond, the native of Buckingham was affiliated with the Whigs from early life. In 1850 he was elected to a seat in the Virginia Legislature from Buckingham. He then was elected Sheriff of Buckingham and was for many years. He gained immense popularity there because of his courteous demeanor and considerate treatment of all, regardless of station. He was a delegate to the Secession Convention. The Hayes administration appointed him Postmaster at Richmond.
