Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He graduated first in his class from the Virginia Military Institute in 1850 and served in the United States Coast Survey following graduation. Graduating from the University of Virginia with a law degree in 1853, he taught at VMI before opening a legal practice in Lewisburg, (West) Virginia. He was appointed Captain in the Greenbriar Cavalry Regiment at the start of the Civil War and was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 27th Virginia Infantry regiment in 1861, seeing action in the First Battle of Manassas. He resigned his officer's commission due to poor health, but remained on active duty in Richmond for the duration of the war. Following the war, he served as legal counsel for the York and Southern Railroad Companies from 1871 until his death in 1892.
