About Constantine Clifton, 2nd Baron Clifton

There is some conflict in these sources with the parents of Margaret Howard, John Howard who married Margaret Plaiz is the son of Robert & Margaret (Scales) Howard, either one Generation is missing or has been added.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some of the complication may be due to Sir John Howard having two wives (Margaret Plaiz was his first), children by both of them, and a complex web of land trusteeships. http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1386-1421/member/ho...

Sources that do not attempt to track "our Glorious Royal Ancestors" are generally to be preferred, as they have no reason to create or perpetuate misinformation. History of Parliament Online, for instance, is only interested in tracking the relationships among Members of Parliament, their constituencies, and their times, and has no other dog in the hunt (but they are not infallible either).

Note: the Cliftons were not, strictly speaking, Barons at this point in time (the official title came - and soon passed on - in Tudor times), but were generic "lords" of the lands that they held.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surtees Society vol. 144, p. 11, footnote 1b: Constantine second lord Clifton of Buckenham, Norfolk, d. 1395, his son sir John Clifton being then one year old . Sir John died without children 1447 . His only sister Elizabeth, wife of sir John Knyvet, was his heir and inherited the castle of Buckenham, Norfolk . (CP III, 308. )
