21. CORNELIS FREDERICK4 BEZUIDENHOUT (GERRIT3, WYNAND LEENDERTSZ2, WYNAND LEENDERTSZ1) was born Abt. August 27, 1760 in Tulbagh, and died October 10, 1815.

Notes for CORNELIS FREDERICK BEZUIDENHOUT: Freek is said to have started the first phase of the slagtersnek rebellion. His refusal to adhere to the courts rulings led to the sending of troops to his home to have him arrested. Freek had often stated that he would fight to the death rather than allow himself to be arrested. Upon seeing troops marching toward his house Freek retreated to a cave near his home, from this vantage point he thought that he could defend himself. Armed with a gun Freek tried to hold off the troops but eventually he was killed. Freek was joined in the cave by his son "Hans". Hans surrendered after seeing his father shot. Some writers describing this incident seemed to have thought that Freek was opposed to being arrested by black troops, but according to Dr. J.A. Heese this should not have been the case because Freek's son Hans was classified as a "nie blanke". This classification is also applied to his "wife". Dr. Heese quotes some testimony at the slagtersnek trial in which some of the witnesses stated that the only people at the farm were the maid, Freek, Hans and Frans Labuschagne. The same witness, Jacob Erasmus, later stated that Freek "se Vrou" took a knapsack filled with ammunition to the cave. The "wife" is identified as Maria Eckard.

Controversially it seems as though Hans was not the son of Maria Eckard because Hans and Maria were about the same age. Included in this book are the justifications as given by Dr. Heese.

Cornelius never married but he did have 3 children.

According to Dr. J.A. Heese the author of "Slagtersnek en sy mense" Freek had a child with his cousin Margaretha Catharina Viviers. This childs name was Gerrit Coenraad, this is however speculation because it cannot be confirmed by any documentation. The basis of this assumption comes from a christening which occurred in 1799. Freek and a lady by the name of "Grietjie Wiwitje" were the witnesses at the christening of the son of Wynand Jacobus Bezuidenhout. Dr. Heese seems to think that the bringing together of these two individuals is a good basis for linking them romantically. (pg 213 "Slagtersnek en sy mense", Tafelberg)

Children of CORNELIS FREDERICK BEZUIDENHOUT are:

	i. GERRIT COENRAAD5 BEZUIDENHOUT, b. Abt. 1790; d. October 22, 1837; m. ANNA MARIA JACOBA PELSER, October 30, 1815, Graaf-Reinet.
Notes for GERRIT COENRAAD BEZUIDENHOUT: Curiously Gerrit did not attend his fathers funeral and he was married just 20 days after his father was shot to death in a cave. Using these facts there seems to have been a certain rift between father and son.

The Slachter's Nek Rebellion

  • In 1815, a farmer from the eastern border of the Cape Colony, Frederik Bezuidenhout, was summoned to appear before a magistrate's court after repeated allegations of his mistreating one of his Khoi labourers.
  • Bezuidenhout resisted arrest and fled to a cave near his home where he defended himself against the soldiers sent to capture him.
  • When he refused to surrender he was shot dead by one of the soldiers.
  • One of Bezuidenhout's brothers, Hans Bezuidenhout, swore revenge.
  • Together with a neighbour Hendrik Prinsloo, Hans Bezuidenhout organised an uprising against the British colonial power.
  • The rebels were finally charged at Uitenhage.
  • Some were cleared, others imprisoned or banished.
  • Six were sentenced to death but one of these was pardoned by the Governor, Lord Charles Somerset.
  • On 9th March 1816 the remaining five were hanged in public at Van Aardtspos.
  • Four of the nooses broke during the procedure as the hangman who came to perform the execution had not realised there were five to be hung, and old ropes had to be used.
  • The four whose ropes broke, as well as the public, pleaded for their lives but Culyer ordered that they be hanged a second time and they were hung one by one
  • Although many of the frontier boere did not support or agree with the rebellion, some Voortrekkers have claimed that it was one of the reasons for the Great Trek.
