Cornelius "Joe" Herholdt (1948 - 2014)

Brief overview:

Joe (66), a Greytown construction and maintenance businessman, was stabbed to death in his home, in McCullum Street, on 18th February 2014. He was outside when four perpetrators invaded his property, and dragged him into the house, and tied him up. They demanded cash and the keys to the safe. His wife was at the family business at the time. Joe was stabbed several times in the neck and chest with a screwdriver and a knife.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said Herholdt was repeatedly stabbed and died in his bedroom. “Community members, who suspected there was something wrong at the victim’s house, reported the matter to the police,” he said.

  • A Fields Security guard, Mbongeni Nxumalo, found three young males hiding under beds and behind a wardrobe. Herholdt’s cellphone was found in one of the attackers pockets, and he gave up the hiding places of the other two perpetrators.

  • One perpetrator managed to escape. The three were arrested and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. They face murder and house robbery charges. They all pleaded not guilty. Zungu, who previously worked for Joe, told his co-accused that Herholdt had lots of money and they should rob him.
