Dr. Cornelius "Cor" Lourens (1945 - 2004)

Brief overview:

Cor (78), a doctor of Psychiatry, On 10th March 2004, Cor was ambushed first, and savagely beaten to death. His wife, Olive May Lourens (79), was tied to a chair and strangled with an electrical cord. Son, Ian, described his father as a gentle soul and a champion of the underdog.

Cornelius had a turbulent relationship with one of his farm workers, Daniel Ncube, and had dismissed him on numerous occasions for theft and not arriving for work. Over the years he had lent Ncube nearly R100,000 ($15,000), not expecting its return. When a security door key was taken and later returned, and after money started disappearing from the house, Cornelius fired Ncube again. Cornelius and his wife were dead two months later.

Ncube’s son, Ben, confessed to the murders.

    • In November 2004, three men were eventually convicted in Johannesburg High Court for the couples murder.
    • Ben Ncube (24), Tshidi Soke (18), and Colin Selemane (19), were all found guilty on two counts of murder and a count of housebreaking with intent to rob. The lawyers representing the three asked for a postponement in sentencing so they could contact probation officers to testify in mitigation of sentence. The court postponed the case to next year when the trial is to be finalised between January 19th and 21st 2005.
