"Cornelis Gerritz, son of Gerrit Cornelisse Van Nieuwkercke, (1635) and Chieltje Cornelissen Slecht was born C. 1662, probably on Long Island, New York and died 1695/6. There was a survey of 86 acres of land laid out for him on April 5, 1686, on the north side of the Esopus Kill in Ulster county, New York. He served as a Private under Captain Hendrickus Beekman, Kingston Troop of Horse in l686-1687. He was married in Ulster county on September 16, 1683 to Jennetje Jansz Kunst, who was born February 24, 1664, probably in New York. She was a daughter of Jan Barrentsen Kunst and his wife Jacomyntje Cornelis Slecht Kunst. Jan Barrentsen Kunst was a house carpenter and came to America in l658 aboard The Gilded Beaver. Another daughter of Jan Barrentsen Kunst was Hellete Kunst, who married Nicholas Roosevelt, and they are the anestors of President Theorore Roosevelt. Jennetje survived her husband and was living as late as August 2, 1729 at which time she was mentioned in a deed as the widow of Cornelis Newkirk, late of Hurley. Cornelis Gerritz had seven children, all of them baptized at Kingston, Ulster county, New York:

BIOGRAPHY: "Cornelis Gerretse Van Nieukirk was probably born, on LongIsland, circa 1662. In 1686-1687 he was a private in the Kingston Troopof Horse under Captain Hendrickus Beekman." BIOGRAPHY: "He died in Hurley, Ulster County, New York, betweenFebruary 7 and March 4, 1695/96, the dates of execution and probate ofhis will, which provided that his wife should have the children, whom henamed, taught reading and writing, and permit them to aquire aprofession, or trade. Under his father's will he had receivedconsiderable real estate which he materially increased." BIOGRAPHY: "The entry of his marriage, on the Kingston records reads:"Cornelis Gerritz, j.m., born in N. Jorck [New York]and resid in Horley[Hurley], and Jannetie Jansz Kunst, j.d., born in Kingston, and resid inHorley. First publication of Banns, 5 Oct 1683." Date of marriage notgiven." BIOGRAPHY: The following is a footnote: "Jan Barentsen Kunst, son of Barent Kunst of Holland, came to Amer icaon the the Guilded Beaver in May, 1558, from Alckmaer, twenty miles fromAmsterdam, Holland. He located in Beverwyck, Albany County, New York,and married Jennette Ariens, by whom he had one child, a daughter,Hillitje Jans Kunst, who married Nicholas Roosevelt. Those latter werethe ancestors of Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt.,presidents of the United States. His first wife having died, JanBarentus Kunst, on April 29, 1663, married Jacomyntje Cornelis Slecht,daughter of Cornelis Barenteen Slecht, and had two children: JannetjeKunst, above named, and BArent Kunst, who married Gerretje GerretseNiewkirk, q.v., and died within a year after his marriage, leaving awidow and an only child Jacomyntje. After the death of Jan BarentsenKunst, his widow married at Kingston, after October 27, 1668, GerretFocken, a young man from Friesland, Holland, by whom she had TryntjeFocken, who married Solomon Du Bois, and Hillitje Focken, who marriedGerret Wynkoop. Agian a widow, Jacomynje married a third time, November24, 1672, Jan Elting, and had five children: Aaltje, Rocloff, Cornelis,Geertje, and William." BIOGRAPHY: "Cornelis Barentsen Slecht of Woerden, near Leyden Holland,father of Jacomynje (Slecht) Kunst and Grandfather of Jannetje Kunst wasin New Netherland as early as 1652. In 1653, his wife Tryntje Bos, was alicensed midwife for Esopus. He was a miller and magistrate, prominatein civil affairs of Esopus and in those of the church." BIOGRAPHY: "In 1661, Peter Stuyvessant, Director General of NewNetheland, granted Esopus, "which had been inhabited for six or sevenyears.." ".. a charter under the name Wiltwick, which was afterwardschanged to Kingston." The first Stephens appointed were Albert Heymans Roosa,Cornelius Barentsen Slecht, and Evert Pels, with Roeloff Swartwout asSchout (Sheriff). All these native Hollanders." BIOGR APHY: "At the burning of Hurley by the Indians, June 7, 1663,Cornelis Barenten Slecht and son Hendrick were officially reporteed aspresnet, but in the official list of captives no mention of the name ofany member of this family is found. A few years before, however, a sonof Mr. Slecht had been captured by the Indians, made to run the gauntletand then burned at the stake." BIOGRAPHY: "In the Spring of 1664 the Englished assumed control of NewNetherland" and established a garrison at Wiltwick under the command ofCaptian Daniel Brodhead. The Dutch sttlers resented the British andtrouble arose. On April 28, 1667, a petition, signed by a large numberof inhabitants, was forwarded to the Governor complaining of beatings"(on Feb 4) of Cornelis Barenteen Slegt. The Governor appointed acommission on April 16, 1667 which, in a kangaroo court style, declaredAntoni d'Elba, Albert Heymans Roosa, Arent Albertson, and CornelisBarentsen Slecht were guilty of insurrection. "These gentleman weretaken to New York for sentence, and Roosa was banished for life from thegovernment; the others for shorter terms out of Esopus, Albany County,New York. These sentences were soon modified, and the accused permittedto return to their homes, but the spirit of resistance was neithermodified nor crushed." Interesting Historical Happenings "Our Heritage "by Claude Moore on May 19, On sundry afternoon prior to the Cowan Museum dedication, I spoke at the second reunion of the Newkirk family, which was held at Kirwood Presbyterian Camp near Wallace. I spoke on "Some Highlights in Lower Cape Fear History". It was attended by 135 persons.≤/p>≤/p>≤p>≤p> ≤/p>≤/p>≤p>This family is descended from Cornelius Van NewKirk, a native of the Netherlands who cam to New Netherlands in 1659. His grandson, Barent Newkirk (1689-1765) moved to Berkley County Virginian and two of his sons, Tobias and Abraham Newkirk settled in Duplin County prior to 1750, and were the progenitors of a large and prominentclan.≤/p>
