CORNELIS WILLEMSE COUWENHOVEN

Cornelis Couwenhoven was born at Flatlands Brooklyn, Long Island, New York in 1672. He purchased 500 acres in Middletown, New Jersey in 1695. He was married to Margaretta Schenck. Cornelis died May 16, 1736 and was buried on his farm in Middletown. In his will he divided his many land purchases between his sons William and Rulif; bequests were also made to his wife and eleven daughters.

Admittedly, one of these is a FindAGrave profile listing his birth as September 29, 1672: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/30378907/cornelis-willemse-van_... . Yet the 9 sources also include a FindAGrave profile for Cornelius Willemszen Van Kouwenhoven showing a November 20, 1672 birth date; however, a search under the listed record number, 173749883, shows that currently, that profile has been removed.

The most definitive listed source is "Bible Records, Monmouth Co., N.J.," in Historical and genealogical miscellany, Vol. 2, by John E. Stillwell, (1903), p. 353: William Cowenhoven and family, which shows Cornelius Cowenhoven born on November 20, 1672, which is also consistent with the date listed at Geni.com of his christening.

WikiTree also lists September 29, 1672, citing 2 sources ( https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Couwenhove-2#Birth ). But the first of these clearly shows November 20 as the birth date at the page cited at WikiTree: see Bergen, T. G. (1881). Register in alphabetical order, of the early settlers of Kings County, Long Island, N. Y., from its first settlement by Europeans to 1700: with contributions to their biographies and genealogies, comp. from various sources. New York: S. W. Green's son, printer, p. 77 at https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/100327781/Home (accessed February 23, 2021). And the second cited source gives the birth date as November 29, 1672: see American Historical Society, Cyclopedia of New Jersey biography in six volumes. Memorial History Company; New York; 1916 Digitized by Internet Archives, 2008, p. 89 at https://archive.org/details/cyclopediaofnewj01amer/page/89/mode/2up .

This is consistent with the gravestone of Cornelius states he "Departed this life the sixteenth of may Anno Domini one thousand seven Hundred thirty six Aged sixty four years five months seventeen days." Given that 1736 was a Leap Year, that would put his birth on November 30, 1672. In light of this, it seems likely someone misread the handwritten entry in the Conover Bible as "20" rather than "29." Thus November 29, 1672 is the most reasonable estimate until proven otherwise.
