Idaho State Journal LOCAL YOUTH DIES IN ACTION IN SOUTH VIET NAM

Tuesday 2 Nov 1965 U.S. Marine Corps CPL Grant L. Clark, 20, 1660 East Street, died Saturday morning in action at DaNang Air Base, in Viet Nam. A telegram to his mother said CPL Clark was killed in an explosion fighting the enemy.  He is the first Pocatello man to die in Viet Nam action.

CPL Clark was born 20 Sep 1945, a son of Clem and Margaret Ireta Buck Clark. His father died 18 Oct 1948.

He lived all his life in Pocatello and graduated from Pocatello High School. In July 1963, he joined the Marine Corps. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Surviving are his mother, 3 brothers, Richard and Neil, Pocatello and Keith, Gardena, CA; 4 sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Lorraine) Mitton, Pocatello; Lois Clark, Hawthorne, CA; Mrs. Doris Aldana, Los Angeles, and Mrs. C. D. (Donna) Russell, Hyrum, UT: grandfather, Ernest Buck and grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Clark, Idaho Falls.

Funeral arrangements are pending the arrival of the body, and will be announced by Manning Funeral Chapel.

"You were the last guy in my unit (S-2 Scout TPS-21 team, Hill 41, SW of Danang) who deserved to be taken early, when most of the rest of us survived. You died in my arms as we tried to save you. I could never even bring myself to write your family, fearing it would only add to their pain. (For these 36 years, I've carried that guilt.) They must have loved you so much, for you to have been such a fine young man. I've never known a kinder fellow in my life. You'd have been such a great husband and father. The best of A Few Good Men. A tragedy. It's been said that God takes the best early, because He cannot stand to wait for them to be with Him. You were the proof. Grant, I think of you almost every day. You're up there near the top on the Wall, on the panel just beside my big brother, who joined you ten months later. You were both heroes."
