Samuel married Hannah Manning, eldest daughter of William and Dorothy Manning of Cambridge, and sister to Samuel Manning, who married Elizabeth Stearns, sister to Samuel. He settled on a farm at the northwest corner of the cross-roads made by the roads from Cambridge to Waltham and by that going north to Lexington.[2/4545]

Samuel died at a young age but nonetheless held many offices of trust in Watertown. He was chosen surveyor of highways in 1666;[4/1:86] surveyor of cattle, fences, and hogs 1669;[4/1:93] constable in 1670;[4/1:96] selectmen in 1673,[4/1:112] 1675,[4/1:121] 1676,[4/1:125] 1678,[4/1:132] 1679,[4/1:136] 1682,[4/2:10] and 1683;[4/2:13] town appraiser 1676[4/1:125] and 1678.[4/1:132] He was first referred to as "corporal" in 1683.[4/2:13] On July 10, 1694 Phillip Shattuck was ordered to "take care of the Widdow Relict of Samll Sternes with her Children and provide for them from this Day for one month (they being Represented Poor and in necessity of Reliefe)"[4/2:76]

Watertown records list the date of death of Corporal Samuel Stearns as the last of August 1682,[5/1:54] but the inventory of the estate has the death date as August 21. Inventory of his estate was taken Sept. 28, 1683 by Samuel Stone, John Mose (probably Morse), William Bond, Sr., and John Biscoe and totaled 481.04.00.[3/6:136]
