About John Stearns

With his parents, was one of the first settlers of Billerica, Massachusetts. Was Town Clerk for two years and constable in 1658.

Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, MA (1855; 2nd ed., Boston 1860 {hereinafter Bond], 450-522).

He married first, Sarah Mixer, with whom he had only one child, Capt. John Stearns, B. May 1654, [Bill VR]; d. at Billerica, 26 Oct 1728, 'a. 74' [Bill V R]; buried Billerica, 'Here lyes buried the body of Capt. John Stearns who decd. Octor. 26, 1728 in ye 75th year of his age.' [gravestone]; m. (1)Elizabeth Bigelow of Watertown; m (2) 22 Apr 1696, Joanna (Call) Parker of Malden. (Bond, 939) Sarah Mixer died when she was 18.

John married second, Mary Lothrop in Barnstable, Dec 1656, had five children listed below. After John died, 5 March 1668/9 his widow married (2) in Billerica 6 May 1669 Capt. William French, Esq. by whom she had four more children. Mary Lothrop was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (learned) KLothrop of Barnstable, and grand-daughter of Rev. Thomas Lothrop of Scituate and Barnstable, who had been exiled from England for his unorthodox preaching. John and Mary's children are listed: All born in Billerica (1) Issac, b. 17 Apr 1658; d. 8 Oct 1659. (Bill V R) (2) Samuel b. 3 Sept 1659, disabled, prob. lunatic; d. 1735, unmar. "In April 1722, the selectmen of Billerica presented a petition to the court about Samuel Stearns, an impotent and discomposed person, who had been for some time taken care of by Capt. John Stearns and Isaac Stearns, his breathren", the town requested that land owned by Samuel be given to the town for his support (Bond, 938) (3) Isaac, 23 Dec 1661; apprenticed to step-father, William French, 1675; m. Mary Merriam. (4) Nathaniel, b. 30 Nov 1663, d. young (5)Thomas, b. Dec 1665; apprenticed to step-father, 1675; d. at Billerica, 9 Feb 1696; m. at Concord, 20 June 1688, Rebecca Chamberlain, dau. of William and Rebecca______ Chamberlain; she m. 2nd at Billerica, 14 July 1699, George Farley. One of the first settlers of Billerica, Massachusetts.
