About Count Jacques Le Serrurier

In 1693, his business partner Isaac Mazyck wished to marry his daughter Marianne. Jacques appeared before the Council and petitioned to have the marriage license refused to the couple. Then, on October 15, he again appeared at the Council and withdrew his petition. In the meantime, Isaac and Marianne were married on October 14, by the pastor of the Church of England, Rev. Mr. Atkins. The witnesses to the wedding were the brother and two brothers-in-law of the bride - Jacques le Serurier II, Henri le Noble and Jean Francois Gignilliat.

It was not that Jacques disapproved of the match, he did approve. But this was in a time when the English settlers were acting to restrict the rights of Huguenots and Jacques was a staunch Huguenot. He feared that the couple's marriage would not be considered legal if performed by a "dissenting pastor" (Huguenot pastor). Because the couple married in the Church of England, it was legal beyond all question.
