MEMORIAL PHOTOS 3 FLOWERS 4 James Thomas Howle was the son of Caroline Burson and Blount Hampton Howle of Elmore and Tallapoosa Counties, and the grandson of David Lawson & Celia Ann McInish Burson of Elmore County. After his mother died of cancer in 1894, James helped to maintain a home in Dadeville for his younger sisters and brother, and was also a postmaster for several years. For many years he lived in Forrest City, Arkansas, where he owned and operated a tourist court and barbecue place called "Uncle Jim's Place."
He was a postmaster at Dadeville from June 9, 1897 until May 1, 1902. "...his bent was toward the majesty of the law, and so he studied law and was admitted to the bar of this state [Alabama] when a young man..." (From his eulogy). When the Spanish-American War began, he volunteered for duty and was enlisted in Company L of the Second Alabama Infantry, and rose to the rank of corporal.
