Ernest Oliver Howle was the oldest child of Blount Hampton & Caroline Burson Howle. He became a prominent businessman & inventor in Chicago. He had at least thirteen patented inventions. His first wife was Annie L. Watts, second Gladys Rutland.

Chicago Tribune, March 29, 1960 -- Services for E. O. Howle, 86, a resident of the Lake Shore Club, who died Sunday in the Woodbine Home, Oak Hill, will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday in the Chapel at 221 E. Erie Street. He had been Chairman of the Condensation Engineering Corporation, president of the Howle-Jackson Company, and was a former president of the Medinah Athletic Club. A brother, B. H. Howle, of Biloxi, Mississippi, survives.

He was the husband of the late Gladys Rutland Howle, and had Masonic affiliations in Nashville, Tennessee. -- Memphis Commercial Appeal - March 30, 1960: Services for Ernest Oliver Howle of Chicago will be held in that city at 2 p. m. today. Burial will be in Memorial Park here. Mr. Howle was the husband of the former Gladys Rutland of Memphis who died in 1934. He was the son-in-law of Mrs. Ramelle Rutland of 1669 Peach. Mr. Howle, president of Condensation Engineering Corporation of Chicago, died Sunday. He was 87. National Funeral Home has local arrangements.
