===Additional Curator's Notes:===

John P. Byrne, b. Sept. 29, 1839, the son of Samuel Byrne, was named after his uncle, John Peyton Byrne. His family remembers that he had red hair, hazel eyes, and fair complexion. He went to Missouri in 1852, living at Memphis, Scotland County until the beginning of the Civil War.

John enlisted in Nov,1861 in Company "I", 2lst Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He participated in the Battles of Lancaster Missouri, Shiloh Tennessee, Corinth Mississippi and others. He was wounded in both hands at Carson's Landing, and was sent to Benton Barracks, St. Louis, where he remained on detached duty until the expiration of his service in Dec., 1864, when he was discharged and he returned home.

John followed farming in Missouri until 1877, when he moved to Millville, Shasta County, CA. A baby a few weeks old, was found in a basket on the train near Redding, Shasta County, California. As John and his wife had no children, they adopted the baby, naming him John Bruce Byrne. He died in Sacramento, California.
