About Dago Gonwelão
http://edwardcdavis.com/uncategorized/august-2020/
Growing up in the 1980s, I suspected my Illinois Trail of Tears and Underground Railroad descended from the first Africans to come to English Virginia in 1619. Today, I can know with assurance that I have gone to the region where my ancestor King Dago Gonwelão was kidnapped before his exile in Germany, and his son John Gowens would endure the Middle Passage with his wife Margaret (Margarita) for the New World. My ancestor would take his son Mahill Gowens to freedom, to live among the Saponi Indians nearly 400 years ago, away from colonial domination, before the chaos since 1662.
