Danie (79), a retired farmer who had moved to town 20 years prior, was stabbed to death in the garden of his home in Voortrekker Street, Balfour, on 13 January 2008. He had been stabbed in the back seven times.
Danie had employed two men, between 18 and 20 years of age, to clear a piece of land to set up his vegetable garden. He was apparently murdered during the morning after they had allegedly lured him to the backyard by complaining about a broken water pipe. At about 12:45 they knocked on the back door to ask his wife, Jacomina Roos (75) for water. They overpowered her after she had unlocked the door.
Neighbour, Hansie Van der Vyfer, heard her shouting and went to investigate. After looking for Danie, he eventually found him 50 metres from the house in tall grass.
Inspector Johan Steyn, the investigating officer, said the murderers assaulted Jacomina and demanded money from her. They locked her in the bathroom before searching the house. She shouted for help through the bathroom window. Neighbour, Hansie van der Vyfer, heard her cries for help and investigated. They found Roos's body about 50m from the house in tall grass in a corner of the stand.
The police made an early breakthrough after finding fingerprints and DNA samples on the plastic bag which contained brand new underpants they had stolen from Roos. Police determined that the suspects were in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.
Follow-up reports cannot be found.
