Esselen, Daniel Johannes (*Worcester, 23.4.1851 - †Isipingo, 10.8.1919), State Secretary of the Nieuwe Republiek, was the son of the Rhenish missionary Louis Francois Esselen and his wife, Catharine Wilhelmine Knobel. He was the brother of Adv. Ewald August Esselen.
In 1875 he married Maria During in Worcester. She died in Robertson in 1882. They had two daughters and a son, Louis Esselen. There is a portrait of him in Illustrated London News (15.2.1890) and in Kuit (infra) Other photographs of him are in the possession of his grandson, L.F.E. Esselen of Pretoria.
