1838-1874 Copied From - Wayne County Business Review - 1887 - West Salem: Along about 1838, in the Northwest corner of Congress Township, a little settlement was made by Peter Rickle. Not much improvement was made until 1863, when the N.Y., P. & O. Railroad was completed through the place. It experienced at that time a good healthy boom, and from that date its progress has been steady. In 1870 a fine brick union school building was erected, and in 1874 the large Methodist Episcopal Church. In April, 1885, the town was visited by a very disastrous fire, but now fine brick structures take the place of wooden buildings. The first agricultural fair was held in 1866, and were continued annually for 15 years. The first brick building was erected by D. Gable in 1865*. This town is situated in the midst of a rich farming and dairy community, and from which the town principally derives its sustenance. There is no manufacturing carried on here with the exception of a furniture factory. Two bad financial failures have taken place here, and their evil effects were felt severely by all classes, but at present the town has recovered from the effects of the failures and is now in a prosperous condition

Obituary of Daniel Gable Daniel Gable: Born April 14, 1828 in Franklin Co., Pa., died of Cerebral Hemmorrhage April 11, 1899, at Minneapolis, Minn. When ten years of age his parents removed to Ohio, settling in Wayne Co. and for fifty years he had continuous residence in that state - the greater portion of which time was spent at West Salem, with the business interests of which village he was so prominently identified. From 1861 to 1888, or for more than a quarter of a century, he was engaged in the drug business and during a portion of which time he, with his partners, owned two stores, the second one being located at Fostoria, Ohio. In 1888 he removed to Minneapolis, Minn., of which city he continued to be a resident up to the time of his death. His remains are laid to rest in the beautiful Lakewood cemetery located in the city which he last chose as a home. His illness was of but three weeks duration and the last ten days were days of semi and total unconsciousness, it being impossible to arouse him from the deep stupor into which he sank on the Tuesday preceding his death. Up to the time of his losing consciousness he suffered greatly but bore his suffering with the same fortitude and patience that characterized him in his daily life. Early in his history he identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal Church and his daily conduct was evidence that he lived up to its precepts and was in constant communication with the Christ whom he accepted as his leader and example. At the time of his death he was a member of the First M.E. Church, Minneapolis, Minn., which society he joined nearly eleven years ago, by letter from his former pastor at West Salem, Ohio, where he had benn a faithful and zealous member of an M.E. Organization since 1861. He was very persistent in his attendance at the various church meetings and his familiar face will be missed in the class room, the prayer meetings, and at the morning service, but if it is so permitted his spirit will often ____ to take part in the services he so dearly loved. A sorrowing widow, a daughter and two sons, all of whom live in Minneapolis, are left to mourn the loss of a faithful, devoted husband, and a loving father, but they have the knowledge that the world will always be brighter because of his consistent, earnest Christian life and that there may be in the future a happy reunion with no more fear of separation.

1855 Married Harriet Harbaugh on 20 September, 1855 by Justice of the Peace

Excerps from an interview of Katharine Gable MacGilvra by her daughter Jean McGilvra Goodfellow, 1979. Full interview in Gail Girard's file:

  • My grandfather, my father's father, (Daniel Gable) was a pharmacist. They didn't call them that then. That isn't the word I want to use. He wasn't exactly a druggist. Druggists came later on. That's what Mr. Guernsey was, a druggist, Newell's father. Newell was my sister Dorothy's husband.
  • My mother (Molly) knew that he (Justus) had been married before, and that was rather unusual, but she had died and there was no divorce or separation. His mother (Harriet harbaugh Gable) was taking care of the baby and he was living with his parents after his wife died, and he was helping to support and keep the home up for his brother and sister. After he got married he brought my mother (Molly) back to the home which wasn't too good.
  • The family lived in an area called Prospect Park, which was on the city limits between Minneapolis and St. Paul, just a block off University Avenue. At first they all lived on Arthur Ave. which was only a few blocks from where they later moved and I was born at 15 Seymour up the hill from Grandpa and Grandmother lived. They lived down the hill from us and they had chickens, but not acreage. They must have had about half an acre, as they had a lot of garden and flowers, fruit bushes, elderberry and currants, because we used to go down and help Grandma pick the fruit. She was always canning, and we used to get out chickens and eggs from her. That's when I started going down to take the chicken feed to them so that I could go past Evan's sister's house where Evan was living. That was when I was in high school.
  • There were two wood houses beside each other. They had one and rented out the other. Then my father bought the great big house up on the hill on Seymour. That was wood, too. You see the main business there in Minnesota was timber and machinery, but timber was the big deal. At first they all lived together, but when my mother and father began to have children it was too much.
  • (As a matter of record the families first lived at 2825 University Ave. After Allison and Mary were born they moved. The parents (Daniel and Harriet) moved to 38 Arthur and Justus bought the house at 15 Seymour and he and Mollie and their children moved in there. Grove continued to live mostly with his grandparents. He always called his father's wife Aunt Mollie. MLM) - They must have moved sooner as Mpls directory has them all living at 38 Aurthur in 1889. Then 28 Aurthur, 1890.

Per "Prospect Park History (The Sheldon Story) states "After a short time he (Humprhey a contractor) built a larger house several hundred feet away and the Senior Gables (Daniel and Harriet) bought the one at 38 Arthur. Their sons had married. Leigh (Justus Liebig) , a widower with one son, Grove (Ritchie Grove), came home to live with his parents until his second marriage. The Leigh Gables lived at the Jerry Smith house on University, then buildt the house that faces the hill on Seymour Avenue, then the house on Clarence Avenue wher they lived until Mrs. Leigh (known affectionatley as Mollie) died. Frank (John Frank Gable) married the daughter of the then county sheriff, Ege., Her brother, Ben, was in the sheriff's office too and lived for a great many years on the corner of Bedford and Clarence and Minnie, the daughter, never married. Besides the Gable house there were only two houses on Seymour. "
