About Daniel Gallagher, Sr

Daniel Gallagher was born in Mayo County Ireland* in the early 1820’s. He came to the US June 2, 1846 on the ship Maine. Also on the same ship we’re his brother Michael and Micheal’s wife Catherine Taugher and his sister Anna Gallagher Judge and her husband Thomas Judge. Daniels brothers tomb stone is engraved with Mayo Country Ireland. Next, See the link below to the resource that brother-in-law Thomas Judge comes from Parish of Bal (Ballagh),Barony of Clanmorris, Mayo County, Connacht Province. Ireland. In looking at the ship manifest, Sister Ann is married when she gets on the ship with Thomas Judge. The Gallagher’s and and Thomas Judge both come from County Mayo, it is possible their Irish homes were close by and could be the same as Thomas Judge. Anna dies in child birth in Ohio. They all eventually settled in Newton township, Manitowoc WI. Thomas and David buy property together. Michael and Catherine buy property next door. Catherine Taugher Gallagher also has several family Taugher members who buy property in Newton Township.

Daniel married Elizabeth Meehan. mar. announcement in Manitowoc Herald, 24 Feb. 1855

In these "Notes for Michael Gallagher" from Lawrence he is capturing what he knows about Daniels brother Michael. The key element for which ship they traveled on is found in the Manitowoc Platbook. Thomas Judge and Daniel Gallager are neighbors. QUESTION: How does Lawernce know that Thomas Judge came from the Parish of Bal (Ballagh),Barony of Clanmorris, Mayo County, Connacht Province. Ireland. His wife was an Ann Gallagher, Daniel and Michaels sister.

Information and assumptions about Michael Gallager. It is known that this couple were in Wisconsin town of Newton by 1853. The family is on the 1855 census of Wisconsin. town of Newton, and the federal census for 1860-l900 in Newton township, Manitowoc County. This family purchased land in the town of Newton Sec. 30 from Perry Smith in 1853, and Smith purchased the land from the government in 1849. At the same time that Catherine and Michael purchased their farm, a Daniel Gallagher and Thomas Judge (his wife was Ann Gallagher) purchased adjoining parcels of land. Michael was a farmer, and was active in town affairs, especially the school system. In 1897 he sold land to the county for a school, which became known as the "Gallagher School". Many of the first generation immigrants did not become citizens of the United States. Michael declared his in t e n t in Sept. 1856, but never completed the process. Little is known about his family background in Ireland. It is thought he came to the United States on 9 Aug. 1842 through the Port of New York from Liverpool. England on the Ship Swanton. If this is born 1832 the case he came over with his father Patrick, and brother Patrick Jr.' If this is true, then Patrick Sr. was born about 1792. This material was found since his naturalization papers said he came to the United States in August 1843. A second Michael Gallagher (Gillighan) arrived in New York on the Ship Maine on June 2, 1846. Amongst the passengers were a Daniel Gallagher, Margaret Gallagher, and a Thomas Judge. It appears that the first passenger list is the right one, but one should not exclude the second one as a possibility. The interesting fact about both of the passenger lists is that the parents are Patrick Gallagher and Margaret Gallegher. The fact that the passenger lists the same name as the father leads to an interesting speculation of the relationship of Michael, Daniel and Thomas Judge. Daniel Gallagher was born in 1819 in Mayo County, Ireland, and died in Newton township, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. His parents were Patrick and Margaret Gallagher. The wife of Thomas Judge was 45 was Ann Gallagher. These two parties purchased land together near the adjoining property of Michael Gallagher. Apparently, these families lived in New York close to each other, in Ohio close to each other, and then Wisconsin. It was in Ohio where Thomas Judge lost his wife during child birth, According to the birth records one child of Michael Gallagher was born in Ohio, one child of Thomas Judge and none of Daniel Gallagher's. Apparently these families traveled together, which indicates some degree of relationship. The families were apparentley passing through through the state of Ohio in 1852-53. The o r a l traditions of the family indicate that the Judge and Daniel Gallagher families were not related. The circumstantial evidence indicates the possibility of a relationship between the three families. If these three families are indeed related, there may be a clue to where Michael Gallagher originated from in Ireland. We know he came from Mayo County. Thomas Judge came from the Parish of Bal (Ballagh),Barony of Clanmorris, Mayo County, Connacht Province. Ireland. His wife was an Ann Gallagher. If these three families are related, they may have originated from the same parish or at least from the same barony.36 For the descendents of this family see Chapter 4, pages 47-59. For the readers convenience a genealogical chart of the Gallagher / Taugher family is shown on page 46. 36 Further research in the records of the nationa1 archives or the 1850 census record of New York should shed some light on whether the above families are related. If the above FAMILIES are indeed related, the compiler has further information on these families. The reader is also referred to the discussion on page 24 of Mayo County More current research indicates that a James Gallagher listed on the 1855 census, near Michael, but is not listed on the 1860 census. This James could" be the father or a brother to Michael. There is also the possibility, that Michael is on the 1850 census for Niagare County, Ontario, Canada, since it is rumored he was a laborer on the Welland Canal.
