John is born in Newton, Manitowoc WI to Irish parents, Daniel and Liza Gallagher. His father dies when he is 16 years old. His mother stays on the farm, but in the 1880 census he is not listed. In the 1910 census John is 53 listed in Sister Bridget Gallagher Trainor household. She’s a widow at age 48 with small children.
in Feb 1900 there is a John H Gallagher that sells 1/8 acre land in Newton from Section 30 and 1 1/4 acres in 1900. Section 30 in Newton is the same section where his father and mother had their farmland. Maybe this is the same John Gallagher who came back from where ever he was working and help to sell the Gallagher homestead /farm in Newton. His mother died in 1909. Then in 1910 he’s living and helping out his newly widowed sister in Manitowoc Rapids.

In the 1870 Census Children(John) are listed as born in Wisconsin. Mary is the oldest 18. John is 16 years old. Father has died.

JOHN GALLAGHER

Close Call.- One week ago last Monday, John Gallagher, one of our young townsmen, while in the lumber woods, near Green Bay, had a very narrow escape from instant death. While he was chopping, a limb some 15 feet long and over three inches in thickness struck him on the top of his head, knocking him down and a large hole in his head.
