Daniel Smith was born about 1648 in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

In 1672, Daniel was one of the "27 Proprietors" of Horse Neck, now Greenwich, F airfield County, CT. On May 23, 1673 Daniel was granted six acres of land. In Dec 1673, he was granted an interest in the out lands lying between the Mianus and the Byram River.

He married Hannah Knapp in 1678/79 in Greenwich, F airfield, CT. Their seventh of thirteen children was Nathaniel, our ancestor.

Daniel Smith had the second highest real estate valuation on the Stamford Grand List of January 1701, being a total of 148 pounds, second only to Jonas Weed Sr. This was several years after his father's death, and much of his estate probably came from Henry Smith's estate.

He also held land in Greenwich from before 1713 until at least the 1720's. He gave rights in Greenwich to his son Daniel in 1706, to his son Nathan in 1722, and a parcel of land in Greenwich to his son Benjamin, also in 1722. On April 23, 1733, he deeded land to his sons, Nathaniel and Benjamin

His wife Hannah died on Mar. 29, 1721. Daniel died 3 March 1739/40 in Greenwich, CT. He was over ninety years of age.

The inventory of his estate was taken June 4, 1740, by Samuel Hait and John Holly, and filed with the account, Oct. 8, 1740, by Daniel Smith and Joseph Smith, administrators. The estate was distributed to his children, viz: Daniel, Joseph, Jabez, Caleb, Nathan, Benjamin, Moses, Ezra, Hannah, Sarah, Ruth, and Mary.
