About Daniel Thompson

Obituary - Free Press - Feb 1, 1860:

In this city, on the 31st of January, Daniel Thompson, aged 73 years. The funeral will take place at the residence of his son, Bradley H. Thopmson, corner of Hastings and Woodbridge Streets, on Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 o'clock A.M. The friends of the family are requested to attend.

The deceased was one of the pioneers of Michigan, having removed here in 1825, since which time he has resided in Detroit or its vicinity. Shortly after his arrival in the then Territory of Michigan he was commissioned by the U.S. Government to open two roads through the dense wilderness which then surrounded Detroit, and performed his duties to the entire satisfaction of all parties interested. These roads are now the great thoroughfares known as the "Chicago" and "Gratiot Roads". During his lifetime he held many public positions and in all of them enjoyed the entire confidence of the community whom he served. He was a warm friend and supporter of Andrew Jackson and also of Stevens T. Mason, first Governer of the State, and was a prominent leader in the first gubernatorial canvass of Michigan. In 1840 he was elected Sheriff of the County of Wayne, to which office he was re-elected in 1842, holding that position 4 years after which he removed to Dearborn, living there in comparative retirement, but frequently visiting his children in this city. He was always happy to meet his old friends and acquaintances and talking over the occurrences of years gone by. During the last war he entered the Army as a volunteer and, with the compnay to which he belonge, was stationed at different points along the Canadian frontier, being an active participant in the excitement of those days.

At the time of his death he was a member of the petit Jury of the Circuit Court, and his last illness commenced while on duty as a juryman. The best medical aid was summoned to his relief, but he gradually passed beyond all human agencies, and, on the morning of the 10th day of his illness, calmly breathed his last.

Detroit Arsenal, Michigan: ... Between Dec 19, 1832 and May 1833, Daniel D. Thompson occupied a small parcel of 6 or 7 acres that was in the alledged Cissne private claim. However, by further examination it was discovered the land was part of the Reservation. Since the claimant, Thompson, had "considerable investment" in the way of a log cabin, Joshua Howard gave several options which the Government could take in obtaining a quit claim deed from Thompson. One was paying Thompson $300 and thus eliminating a forcible ejection and possible embarrassment for the Government. However Thomopson felt the land was his under the act of Apr 17, 1828, which confirmed the proceedings of the land commissionment for military purposes. As US Attorney Daniel LeRoy saw this problem, Thompson had no right to the land since the taking of timber by the US constituted occupancy. Howard's sentiments were clearly with Thompson but legally he knew that Thompson had to relinquish the questional parcel. In May 1833, a quit claim deed was received from Thompson but this was not the end of the case as will be seen later.
