David C. Browne, 77, Topeka, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Browne was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He later worked for the Scott Puffer Chevrolet dealership until 1957. He worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service from 1957 until he retired in 1984.

He was born March 29, 1925, in Emmett, the son of Matthew and Margaret McCormick Browne.

Mr. Browne was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council No. 534, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He also was a volunteer at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center.

He married Dorothy L. Ormsby on Sept. 29, 1949, in Topeka. She died Aug. 19, 1997. He also was preceded in death by a son, David A. Browne, on Feb. 5, 1978.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Crow, Springfield, Mo., and Rita South, Klamath Falls, Ore.; a brother, Florian Browne, Topeka; two sisters, Theresa Stadler and Kathleen Browne, both of Topeka; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, with military honors by Fort Riley. Mr. Browne will lie in state after 2 p.m. today at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Council No. 534 rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research and sent in care of the funeral home.
