“David and Elizabeth brought their nine children from Greene County, PA., to Ohio in 1834. They halted at the David Lyon place, buying a section or so of land enabling David to give one hundred acres to each child, this tying down his whole clan around him for a generation or so. A later assesment listed his holdings at $4,000, a tidy sum those days, which may have come from sale of assets in Pennsylvania. I did not disturb those tomes of Land Transfers, as i was overwhelmed by a plethora of other problems. Marriages and deeds were recorded meticulously as far back as occurred in the new land, but mere births and deaths were entered at connivence of parents, doctors, pastors, undertakers, and secretaries.
Tome I in Philadelphia Court House records begins with 1865 and frequently a line gives birthdate but only “child”, with the other items along the line “Unknown”. Researchers with long noses and a keen sense of smell can ferret out other sources of information: Cemeteries, Bibles, etc. More material is constantly becoming available, what with microfilming, available censuses, and burgeoning of lical genealogist societies and exploding interest amongst roosters..”…

John Gardner, David”s first child [as dad recalled] was tall, bald with long beard; he was a farmer, teacher and school director for many years. For some years he served as a constable, spending a lot of time hounding down criminals, only to have them surrender to a local squire, one jump ahead, avoiding prison and getting a little more than a mere reprimand. He and his father David donated land for High Hill Cemetery and lumber for the building. ..” ..

After worshiping in private houses, the class about 1838, built on Henry Gardner's place, in the southwest quarter of Section 12, a small log meeting house, known as the High Hill Church. It had a mud-daubed interior, seats made of split chestnut poles, no pulpit, but a platform instead, withal a typical pioneer structure. Among the early members were David and John Gardner and Nathan Meeks, Sr. The society did not attain a great numerical strength, and in a few years perished."
