"The growing family lived at various places in the rolling hills of southeastern Ohio in the years that followed. They moved in 1858 to New Concord, in Musingum County, lived for a time at Brownsville in the southeast corner of Licking County, at Sego, and at Zanesville, the bustling county seat of Musingum County. The family was poor but industrious."

"With a partner he ventured later into the shoe business in Cabridge but this undertaking was a casualty of the Panic of 1857."

Enlisted on May 2, 1864 at the age of 44 as a Private in Company D, 160th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Returned to civilian life on September 7, 1864 and family moved to Zanesville, Ohio.

Sustained an injury to his foot during the retreat from the last battle from which it is said that blood oozed out of his shoe tops during the attack, defeat, and retreat. He was a cripple for the rest of his life and settled in New Concord as a maker of fine boots.
